Top 5 Stylish Safety Razors
The last few months I have been avoiding making this zero waste swap. Safety razors tend to have intimidating designs and I assumed they were expensive. However, once I started looking into them, I discovered new designs that would ultimately help me overcome my fear.
You can find numerous articles discussing reasons to swap your traditional plastic razor for a more sustainable one since they are touted as a superior zero-waste option. There is, however, an initial investment unlike traditional razors that you must take into consideration. Safety razors can also be challenging to find depending on your location.
Nevertheless, what those articles overlook are the health-related reasons to switch from a plastic razor to a safety razor. Through research I uncovered more about the chemicals found on the moisture strip around the conventional razor. I avoid these chemicals at all costs and no longer support companies that do not disclose the product’s materials transparently.
**See below for more information about the chemicals used in a traditional moisture strip and reasons why consumers should reconsider buying another plastic razor
Here are the top 5 Safety Razor’s I would recommend.
*Two razors are from the same company, don’t come for me!
Rockwell-Rockwell safety razors have been a Canadian favorite since 2014. This classic razor is made from stainless steel and is easily accessible due to it’s loyal customer base.
ALBATROSS- Their Premium Safety Razor is called the Butterfly. This razor has a longer handle than some of the other razors listed which provides consumers with a quicker and easier shave (according to reviews). You can purchase this Albatross razor at my favorite zero waste retailer the Package Free Shop.
ALBATROSS- Another premium safety razor from Albatross is their classic short-handled razor. According to online reviews, this razor is quite popular among men for shaving their facial hair without cutting themselves. You can find this razor in store or online at my favorite zero waste (and eco-friendly) retailers; the Eco Den in Canada, or the Package Free Shop in New York.
Well Kept- This safety razor has an upgraded modern design for the consumer that can’t live without color. You can find this razor at two of my favorite eco friendly retailers here in Canada. If you want instant gratification head to HereAfter, where they carry this razor and the replacement blades in black and pink. If you want to browse online, head to ShopEco where they offer the razor and the blades on their website and in-store. When comparing affordability among the other five razors listed, this brand is the most affordable.
ECO ROOTS - I was visiting an eco-store a few months ago when I saw a razor called Eco Roots. Although I did not purchase this exact razor in that moment, it did keep me curious to know more. I spent time reviewing the sustainable and zero waste impacts safety razors provide. My search led me to this post, and I was able to pick a razor that was right for me.
LEAF - I saved the Leaf razor for last and I will explain why. When searching for a safety razor there are plenty of factors to consider. I wanted you, as a consumer, to have a clear overview of the other razors before I discussed this one.
The Leaf safety razor is the only razor on this list with a pivoting head. A pivoting head is something consumers are familiar with, but no one considered this design (using only stainless steel) a possibility until now.
The traditional safety razors above have different qualities that are admirable, however, the Leaf Shave company addresses more areas of concern for new zero waste consumers. The handle is longer, the head pivots, you can adjust the blades for sensitivity, or add up to 3 blades for a closer save. These are all great qualities for a new company because it takes the fear of switching to a safety razor away for consumers. There were only a few cons to this razor; low stock availability, shipping fees, chrome coating and price.
Things to consider
*These razors might not seem affordable initially, but when compared to a $39+ dollar Gillette razor you will start to understand why conscious consumers have already made this switch. The cost of replacement blades for a safety razor, are pennies in contrast.
*I did not address care instructions because they differ per razor or brand please follow their instructions.
